Pregnancy, Labour and Postnatal Conference – Sydney
Demystifying pelvic pain and dysfunction during pregnancy and beyond
Collaborate / Educate / Participate
Pregnancy Massage Australia is delighted to announce our 3rd Biennial Pregnancy, Labour and Postnatal Conference. The 2023 conference theme is “Demystifying pelvic pain and dysfunction during pregnancy and beyond”. Pregnancy-related Pelvic Girdle Pain is estimated to affect around half to three quarters of women in the during pregnancy. For a portion of women (20%) will report severe symptoms from 20-30 weeks gestation and between 33-50% of women; report symptoms prior to 20 weeks gestation. Women are affected by pregnancy or postnatal pelvic girdle pain both physically and emotionally; treating pelvic girdle pain requires therapists to have a focus on how to manage clients with knowledge, empathy and understanding.
The speakers have been chosen for their expertise in Women’s Health and pregnancy. The speakers ,are immersed in working with client’s day to day and they will be sharing their clinical and practical experience with you.
The conference will improve your confidence and competence in managing women with pelvic girdle pain and you will walk away with a deeper understanding of pregnancy and postpartum pelvic girdle pain including recognising key signs and symptoms; understanding how pregnancy and the postnatal period can impact the pelvis, and the role of the nervous system in the presentation and management of pelvic girdle pain. You will have an increased knowledge on how to educate your clients and provide treatment options.
The sessions will be an exchange of knowledge and hands on practical sessions. You will gain new skills to implement into your clinical practices.
The conference is open to all therapists wanting to further your knowledge to care for women experiencing pain during pregnancy and postnatally.

Josephine Key
Dip. Phys; PGD Manipulative Therapy; MPAA; Neuro-musculo-skeletal physiotherapist
Josephine Key is a published author and trainer of manual and movement therapists globally. The Key Approach is a practical functional model for manual and movement therapists that helps explain how altered movement patterns underlie clinical pain presentations. She has been a practising clinician for over 40 years. She describes herself as a neuromuscular-skeletal physiotherapist. She believes that the body functions as a whole system through the interaction of the nervous, myofascial and skeletal systems. As each system influences the other, changed function in one system will be also reflected in the others. A problem in one of the ‘parts’ affects the functioning of the whole system.
Josephine is going to present on hip and pelvic dysfunction during pregnancy and the postnatal period. Josephine will introduce the Key approach then provide demonstration and discuss relevant simple exercise therapy.

What our attendees said about the 2019 Conference
Learning new information to continually aim to become a better therapist and updating/reminding myself of information and techniques that I may have forgotten was valuable to me.
The variety of topics presented was my favourite aspect of the conference. There was minimal double-ups and each topic deeply captured my attention and held it for the duration of the presentation.
The most valuable thing to me was connecting with a room full of like-minded therapists, as well as techniques covered were a good reminder and will be able to be applied in clinic. Anne’s presentation on mental health was fantastic – a great reminder that the work we’re doing helps mentally, as well as physically, and this can have long lasting impacts on Mum and baby!
