Pregnancy Massage Australia provides a range of courses that give you the opportunity to develop the skills and confidence you need to apply therapeutic massage to your pregnant clients. A list of current available courses is provided below.

The Pathway to becoming a NurtureLife® Registered Practitioner

Option 1 – Combined Courses
Register into the NurtureLife® Pregnancy Massage Practitioners five day course which includes the Certificate of Pregnancy Massage, the Practitioner of Pregnancy Massage and 12month registration to the NurtureLife® family.

Option 2 – Separate Courses
Complete the Certificate of Pregnancy Massage two day course.
Then at any time, follow on to complete the NurtureLife® Pregnancy Massage Practitioner UPGRADE three day course which includes the Practitioner of Pregnancy Massage and 12month registration to the NurtureLife® family.

Option 3 – Separate Courses
Complete the Practitioner of Pregnancy Massage five day course which includes the Certificate of Pregnancy Massage.
Then at any time, follow on to register as a NurtureLife® Practitioner, individual therapist, spa or massage clinic including 12month registration to the NurtureLife® family.

Pregnancy is a very special time in a woman’s life that creates significant physiological, structural, and psychological changes. Understanding these changes will help you, the massage therapist, to determine the outcome of your treatment. It will give you the confidence and guidance to apply appropriate therapeutic massage to your pregnant client.

During the course you will study the gentle application of massage for pregnant women, and the appropriate techniques and style of application suitable for each trimester. You will discover how beneficial massage is during pregnancy and beyond.

Course Details

Day 1
We will introduce you to the many benefits of massage during pregnancy – you will learn techniques and gain the confidence to massage and treat pregnant clients.
• Develop awareness to the physiological changes during pregnancy
• Begin to understand body changes, and the effects on various bodily systems
• Joints and muscles affected during pregnancy
• Introduction to some of High Risk conditions unique to pregnancy and contra indications for massage during pregnancy
• Pregnancy myths will be explained and identified including endangerment sites reflex points and acupressure points
• Alleviate the myths of first trimester massage
• Review of the three trimesters, including lying positions appropriate for pregnancy through each trimester
• Draping – client comfort and privacy
• Massage techniques appropriate during pregnancy
• How to prepare for a pregnancy massage treatment
• Full body massage demonstrated

Day 2
You will begin to develop massage skills to treat some specific musculoskeletal conditions, which pregnant clients will present with.
• How to prepare a pregnancy massage treatment and assess the client for massage treatment
• Massage techniques during pregnancy – develop appropriate applications for each trimester
• Application of gentle release techniques for hip pain with a focus on gluteal muscles
• Application of gentle Myofascial hip mobilisation
• Myofascial Piriformis release unique for pregnancy
• Introduction to shoulder releases and mobilisation to reduce pregnancy posture changes
• Introduction to abdominal massage unique to pregnancy, which helps create a supportive mother-baby connection.

• Seminar times are 9am to 5pm.
• Course is suitable for Massage Therapists (Cert IV & Diploma), Myotherapists, Naturopaths, Osteopaths and Acupuncturists.
• Also suitable for midwives and beauty therapists who have a knowledge of massage.
• Comprehensive seminar notes will be provided at the commencement of the seminar.
• Morning & afternoon teas provided.

Practitioner of Pregnancy Massage

Course aims

This course offers in-depth insight into how to support women through pregnancy and beyond. We will review in great detail specific conditions, including high-risk pregnancies, and the implication of massage. Our focus is to support all women and reduce the more complex discomforts experienced in pregnancy. We will develop your awareness of the benefits of massage through the perinatal journey from pre-conception to pregnancy to labour and birth and onto postnatal support.

During the course you gain a greater insight into the complex body and system changes happening through pregnancy, labour and postnatal.

We will explore your own emotive feelings towards pregnancy, labour and beyond so you can apply practical tools to support all clients with empathy and understanding. You will explore your own self-development as a pregnancy massage specialist.

By the end of the course you will have developed the confidence and knowledge needed to treat pregnant women throughout their journey into motherhood and beyond. You will also have the opportunity to become part of the NurtureLife® network including the support of our mentoring program (learn more about this on our website) and have a team of practitioners around you to support you and refer clients to if required.

Course details

The Practitioner of Pregnancy Massage course will advance your massage knowledge and skills, including developing further your understanding of the many complex presentations of pregnancy. We will review in greater detail high-risk conditions unique to pregnancy and how to treat each of these conditions through each trimester.

We will consolidate your understanding of the anatomy and physiology of pregnancy, particularly in relation to complex musculoskeletal changes unique to pregnancy. How to apply orthopaedic assessment and the adaption of these skills through each trimester to determine appropriate treatment plan.

You will learn how to adapt your treatment plans to suit the individual needs of your clients, through massage, gentle breathe, stretching and visualisations unique to pregnancy.

You will explore massage techniques for use in labour, active partner training, and postnatal massage so you can create a unique NurtureLife® experience for your clients.

Course Outline

We will explore unique pregnancy conditions and understand the complexities of high risk clients – what is contraindicated for massage? We will also be learning how we can offer emotional support and reduce the many stresses of pregnancy.

Day 1
• We will explore the complex pregnancy conditions and understand the complexities of High Risk clients – what is contraindicated for massage
• Throughout the course we will be exploring how we can offer emotional support and reduce the many stresses
 of pregnancy

We will explore in detail:
• Orthopaedic assessments unique for pregnancy
How to treat and reduce the pain patterns associated with:
• Pelvic Girdle Instability (PGI) this is a complex and debilitating condition common in pregnancy
• Pubic Symphysis Pubis Instability/diastasis (PSD or PSI)
• Pregnancy ligamentous pain, how to recognise the ligament pain patterns and apply massage treatment
• How to support changes through the spine and imbalances associated with lower back pain including treatment of sacroiliac joint pain gluteal muscle release, Piriformis release, psoas release unique for pregnancy and lumbar lordosis release
• How to ease the symptoms of restless leg syndrome, leg and calf cramping, and reduction of oedema in the legs
Day 2
We explore in detail the changes to the thoracic spine, shoulder, ribs, arms and abdomen.
• Complex shoulder treatment including thoracic spine, shoulder mobilisations to improve posture, function and movement. We will apply massage applications to improve posture for mums still working and/or breast-feeding. You will learn techniques to reduce client pain and discomfort
• How to assess for Carpel tunnel and oedema of the arms. You will learn treatment protocols for assessment and management of carpel tunnel and oedema of the arms
• Assessment of neck movement and gentle application of massage techniques to reduce pain and improve movement patterns
• Gentle application of rib release and respiratory releases to ease the shortness of breath common in pregnancy
• How to apply an abdominal massage to support diastasis recti and digestive system changes
• Create a unique mother-baby connection
Day 3
You will have the opportunity to put together all you have learnt and apply to a pregnant client, you will experience firsthand the benefits of the many new techniques you have learnt.
• Review and practice of new techniques in a simulated full body practice
• Pregnancy Massage Clinic: You will apply a full body pregnancy massage to a pregnant woman under supervision and receive invaluable feedback of your treatment
• You will also review ‘Partner Training & Massage for Labour’ by viewing a birth DVD.
• We will discuss the High Risk conditions unique to early postpartum.
• We will explore how to support a mother after a loss
• When you can and can’t massage in the postpartum

WORKSHOP: Partner Training & Massage for Labour
Learn how to demonstrate massage techniques for labour. Massage can be used during the birth, to make it easier and more comfortable for the mother.
A well prepared partner offering positive support during labour will assist in maintaining relaxation and focus for the labouring mum. In this workshop we will learn how to equip our clients to utilise massage for labour.
We will focus on:
• How and when to recommend massage for labour
• How to prepare a partner massage session
• Specific massage techniques for labour
• Focus on the latent first stage of labour and points to support the labouring woman.
